Product Review Spoiler Alert: Our old dog Daisy really is (almost) new again!
Disclosure: We received free product in exchange for our honest opinion in this review. As always, we only sample items that fit within our lifestyle and from companies that encourage genuine feedback in reviews. In this instance, we are excited to share our experience with Old Timer from NHV.
Thanks to a chance encounter at a pet blogger’s conference this summer, we recently had an opportunity to try a handful of NHV Natural Pet Product’s holistic remedies for a variety of the Crazy Crew’s ailments. With eight fluffy furkids, unfortunately there are always plenty of ails to choose from. After a consultation with NHV, we decided to focus on three areas: Daisy’s inevitable aging (10yo mastiff), Juliet’s ECG (10yo dmh), and chronic ear infections (all canine kids). This review will focus on the primary aging supplement (Old Timer) for Miss Daisy.
Daisy is a pure-bred 10yo Neapolitan Mastiff and she struggles with immune system challenges and ongoing chronic allergies. Her hips and knees are sensitive and very worn, which is not uncommon in senior giant breeds. I expected it, it just happens. She hadn’t been exhibiting pain, but her aging had begun to impact her mobility so her discomfort increased. In the last 18mos, she spent the vast majority of the time sleeping or being sedentary. She still loved to go on walks, but could barely make it around the block. Heartbreaking.
As a result, when NHV sent us two supplements for Daisy, Old Timer’s & Milk Thistle, we were more than happy to give them a try. In all honesty, I did harbor a smidge of skepticism. I believe in holistic medicine, but it takes expertise and diligence to create formulations that do in fact make a difference. But it was worth a shot!!
The Details
Old Timer’s is a liquid supplement that is billed as ‘natural support to help alleviate arthritis, muscle and joint discomfort’. It offers 1) support for dogs with arthritis, 2) soothing for painful joints, 3) ease of inflammation, and 4) boosting of the immune system. It includes six different herbal ingredients (including ginseng & ginger), all of which are detailed on the company’s website with specifics as to the ailments they are intended to address. (This is true of all supplements that they offer.)
My first concern, given Daisy is historically a picky eater, was ‘would she tolerate the addition of the product to her food’? ESPECIALLY given the volume needed for a 150lb pup? Not a problem! I eased her in with a half dose for a week, and then the full therapeutic dose thereafter, but other than a little coughing (perhaps the cayenne?) with the very first dose, she didn’t bat an eye. What a pleasant surprise! We’ve since learned that NHV’s products are compounded in glycerin rather than the typical alcohol, which makes them much more palatable. [Administration Note: Daisy’s full therapeutic dose is 2 droppers full, whereas most NON-horse-sized dogs are dosed in drops.]
The Verdict
Would it work? I didn’t have to wait long to find out! Within three weeks, Daisy was standing (and drooling) as she waited for her food (vs laying down to rest while it’s being prepared). Within four weeks, her allergy induced hotspots (ALWAYS present in the fall) had reduced. As we went into the second month, the changes were a little more dramatic. I found myself pleasantly annoyed at the return of my slobbering ottoman/shadow as she followed me around the house while I did chores. (My house isn’t that big! #lol) She’s had a couple spurts of genuine running. Not fast walking, actual galloping. WHAAAT? She’s also now regularly partaking in her favorite back scratching activity (see video below) that she hadn’t felt well enough to do in a year or two. And others have noticed the changes too! Our pet sitter recently commented “She’s so full of life!” Why yes, yes she is. #happysigh
With that, NHV’s Old Timer has been added to our ongoing supplement repertoire! And I am excited to try the other products for our multitude of Crazy ailments. In fact, we believe so whole-heartedly in these products that we have entered into an ongoing affiliate relationship with NHV. Keep an eye out for other product reviews including BK Detox for Cats (immune systems), PetOmega 3 for Dogs (overall health), Echo Gold for Dogs (ear infections), and Heal Care Ointment for Dogs.

Will definitely have to check this out! I have a 2 year old Mastiff/St Bernard mix who will need it eventually for those hips and joints! Great post, good to know about this product!
Do! They have some highly concentrated omegas too that will help him his joints limber in his youth so they don’t get bad. I didn’t start Daisy on oils until she was pbly 5 or 6 and I wish I’d started her earlier… but I DO credit them for keeping her relatively agile to the ripe old age of 10. 🙂
Your girl is just gorgeous – I’m glad these products are making a difference to Daisy’s quality of life.
Thank you!! Definitely making a huge difference. 🙂
Wow! It is great to hear that Daisy is doing so well on this supplement. It sounds like it has helped her tremendously!
How happy you must be to see Daisy doing so well and feeling more vibrant! As pet owners we always want the best for our fur kids and when we find something that makes them feel better, how great is that!
Just love holistic products definitely going to try this on my dogs
We’re definitely big fans now. It just makes so much sense doesn’t it??
Guggul has many benefits for humans and it is interesting to see it used in pet products! Great info for us to learn more about holistic approaches to caring for our aging pups!
I had never heard of Guggul before… let alone for human use. I’m going to have to look into it. Thanks for sharing! It’s definitely working wonders for Daisy.
Great review and thank you for the coupon code. I bet our senior dog would benefit from a holistic remedy like this.
For sure! I have been so happy with the results. She just got diagnosed with a new cancerous lump so I’ll be buying one of their cancer packs tomorrow. :/ They have Old Timer for kitties too!
How great you found something that works so well for her!
Daisy is a cutie! We’re glad the supplement worked so well for her.
Thank you! In many ways, it’s a face only a mother could love. 🙂
I had to leave your blog and use the code you offered. I can’t wait to get it for Keira!
Yayyy!!! Please let me know how she does on it. I had Daisy at the vet today and unfortunately he diagnosed a new abnormal lump to remove(in her cheek!) — so I’ll be buying their one (or more) of their cancer blends tomorrow!
Have never heard of this but will check it out when the time comes thank you
My oldest dog, Zora is 13 1/2 and it is really becoming obvious that she is a senior girl. She has bad hips and arthritis and she recently had a bout of vestibular disease. Your review is great and this is a product I will definitely try based on your recommendation. It’s hard to watch my girl slowing down and if there are some natural supplements and tinctures that can make her senior years more comfortable, I’m all in!
Daisy was in the same boat, sans the vestibular (scary!). I really was skeptical that it would make a visible difference. I’m used to giving the kids products based on common sense and ‘some’ empirical research (i.e. fish oils/coconut oils, etc.) so I was definitely bought into the concept, but truly didn’t expect such a huge difference in her behavior. I had her at the vet today and unfortunately diagnosed a new abnormal lump to remove — so I’ll be buying their cancer blends tomorrow! 🙂 (Their free consultation service is great too … if you want to explore other options, there might be something that would prevent a vestibular recurrence?)
I am so glad Daisy is feeling better. Natural supplements can be so beneficial.
I’m so glad it is making such a difference! Reese will be eleven years in February but at this time she still wants to play fetch 24/7! I love the idea of this product line. Pinning for reference. Thank you.
It really is! I took her for an urban hike yesterday and she knocked it out of the park… and this is the dog that could barely make it around the block 4 months ago! 🙂 LOVE it!
Felix is aging and we’re definitely looking for supplements to help ease his ailments. He has two bad knees and he’s not quite as spry as he used to be. We’ll have to check this out.
I’ve been so impressed with this company. Daisy has gone from barely making it around the block to walking around an urban park without missing a beat. HUGE fan. We’re also using some of their other products that appear to be really promising.
Wow! This supplement sounds like a really great product!
So great they are making a difference- wonder if they would help my arthritis too LOL- I have been recommended Milk Thistle, Omegas and Tumeric, as well as Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Kilo the Pug is 4 and jumps like a ninja so i am sure he will have bad knees. He gets most in his diet but will certainly look at these.
Right?!? That thought crossed my mind too. 🙂 Daisy is on Milk Thistle now too, and has been on Omegas for years… and we’re ordering one of the cancer blends that includes tumeric next week. (Daisy has a new abnormal lump.) Sounds like we’re getting good and consistent advice!! 🙂
Oh that’s nice! Do you know if they ship worldwide? Amy has HD and she’s only 3 years old, so I want to provide her with all the vitamins she needs! And Charlie has allergy hotspots too! ATM, I’m trying something new for him too!!
I know I responded privately, but wanted to share here too in case somebody else has the question… YES, they ship worldwide, and they do have some specific blends for pups with allergies. They have blends for virtually everything, but if you’re not sure what to purchase,, their help desk is fantastic in helping point you in the right direction. Good luck!!
Wow, those are pretty dramatic improvements. I am definitely going to give this a try. Ruby has both some stiffness and itchiness. She’s also only 17 pounds so would probably require a smaller dose than adorable Daisy. LOL
I’m glad that Daisy is feeling young again! I tend to be skeptical when it comes to supplements, but these sound like they are worth checking out!
Yay! I’m so glad the supplements have helped! Did they at any point impact the pups who may have sensitive stomachs? Bean has horrible allergies and is prone to ear infections but I have always avoided supplements like this for fear they would mess up her sensitive tummy!
